Dear test_kari_launch2,

I am anticipating Don Bennett's arrival on Friday for his
month-long visit to this area. It's been a real busy time
booking his more than a dozen lectures, and putting out
advertisements. I hope everyone relatively local will take
advantage of this opportunity to meet one of the more
experienced and articulate of the raw leaders in this
country. And for those of you who aren't in SE Michigan,
how about the Vibrant Living Weekend, Sept. 6-7?
www.health101.org/vibrantlivingweekend .

I didn't manage to write a feature-length article for this
edition, so why not take this opportunity to peruse the
"Articles" section at my website, www.LivingYogaNow.com , or
the one at Don Bennett's website, www.health101.org .
There you will find plenty of great reading to keep you
busy until my next newsletter!

I hope you can come to the Yoga For Peace Festival in
Dearborn this Sunday - Don and I will be there all day, and
Don is giving a talk at noon. It's a great place to bring
kids, too. www.risingsunyoga.com .

Check out the extensive list of great events this month - I
hope to see you! Enjoy the season's wonderful
blueberries, and take the time to go out and pick some -
it's fun and relaxing, and of course they're extra delicious and
nutritious right off the bush and into your mouth!

-Ellen

The Wonderful Blueberry

All berries are great sources of vitamin C, and in
stimulating bladder and colon aid the body's natural
cleansing actions.

Blueberries are classified as a "sub-acid" fruit, and come
in two varieties: highbush are the bigger, cultivated
variety, and lowbush are the smaller, wild ones. Purchase
them fresh from April to September. In Michigan the high
season is July through August.

When selecting blueberries in a store, look for ones with a
silvery, powdery sheen - this is called "bloom", and it
indicates freshness. Bloom is nature's way of protecting
the berries from the sun and pests. It disappears a week
after harvest, so darker berries without this sheen or
bloom are aging.

Refridgerate harvested berries in a low flat containers
with airflow, and rinse just before serving. To freeze
them for later use, rinse them gently then spread them out
in one layer on cookie sheets and when just frozen transfer
them to freezer bags. Frozen they will last well up to a
year.

More Cool Summer Recipes

(these were mostly invented in my own kitchen with my kids)

Fruit Salad
Dice as many ripe nectarines as you care for and toss them
in a bowl with some blueberries.
Next, blend a couple of nectarines (no water is needed if
they are truly ripe!), and pour this sauce over your fruit.
Stir and enjoy!

Papaya Boats
Slice one of the small yellow papayas in half lengthwise
and remove the seeds.
Fill each of the seed cavities with blueberries, and
squeeze lime juice over all.
Eat with a spoon!

Peach-tomato Soup
Blend equal portions of fresh ripe peaches and heirloom
tomatoes. Stir in some diced peaches or diced tomato, and
garnish with an edible nasturtium flower (or a sprig of
your favorite fresh herb).

Melon Mylk
Blend the ripe flesh of any one kind of melon. No other
ingredients needed! (But a handful of fresh mint leaves
blended in can be extra refreshing.) Pour into a tall
glass, garnish with a mint leaf, and enjoy.

Chant for Peace & Compassion

I often lead this beautiful, simple sanskrit chant in my yoga

classes, and I get so many requests for the words that I decided

to print it here for everyone:

Lokah samasthah sukhino bhavanthu

"May all beings everywhere be happy and free of suffering,
and may my thoughts, words, and actions contribute to the
happiness and freedom of all beings."
