My primary teaching style is inspired by vinyasa krama yoga, a style brought to prominence by the legendary yogi Sri. T. Krishnamacharya. In this flowing yoga the functions of the mind, body, and breath are integrated and the student experiences an elevated level of mental peace.
The physical postures are linked to each other with transitional movements (vinyasas), while the mind closely follows the slow, deliberate, deep breathing. Thus the breath is used as a harness that links the body and mind, and the union of yoga is achieved.
The movements are slow in vinyasa yoga, and the student learns to deepen the breath and slow the breathing rate. By keeping the mind focused on the controlled breath, which leads the movements, the student progresses safely and without injury. A state of steady awareness is cultivated, and from this place the student can access his or her natural inner state of peace and joy.
Living Yoga's classes are held in the intimacy of my home on the west side of Ann Arbor. The classes are kept small, and foster one-on-one attention and a real experience of personal growth and community building. Classes are appropriate for men and women of beginning and intermediate levels. Classes for children/families will be added soon.

I like the gentle and responsive style of poses, and the calm, intimate setting. I feel much more in tune with my body, and feel my strength coming back. This helps me in every other part of my life relationships, work, etc. Thank you Ellen!

Great pace, and an aid to inner focusing and physical awareness.

I am enjoying Ellen's style of teaching more than any class I've taken in 10 years. She has the youngest approach of following your heart, mind, and body. When I am done with each session I feel athletic and relaxed. I like the fact that the sessions end with meditation. I can speak from my experience, it is one of the best.
-Wesen Petersen
My hour of yoga in the home of such a capable teacher is a wonderful way to start the week. The weekly "focus" points, neighborhood feel and personal touch in small classes make it just the perfect experience.

Testimonials:
Studying with you was both practically useful, as well as inspiring. You clarified and corrected poses I'd been doing on my own for years, and you showed me how to set up a home practice that was doable, yet comprehensive and balanced. I appreciated your cheerfulness, enthusiasm, genuine caring, and especially your encouragement. And those meditations in Shavasana at the end were priceless - I felt myself gliding very naturally into a wonderfully deep state of peace and rejuvenation. Thank you!

Testimonials:
Ellen's own glowing health and energy initially attracted me to learn what she knows! She helped me to see the potential benefits of going raw and encouraged me to give it a 30-day trial. I really appreciated her careful listening to me and her flexible approach.
We came up with a plan for me to try out a "mostly raw" way of eating for the month. I quickly found that because of the detailed guidance from Ellen as well as daily email support, it was easy for me to eat virtually all raw.
During the initial 30 days I noticed many changes. My insomnia and twitchy legs at night almost completely disappeared! I also found it easier to get up in the morning, and felt a much steadier energy level and emotional balance throughout the day. After many years on anti depressant medication, I finallly felt well enought to taper off and completely discontinue them (under my doctor's supervision). Although I enjoyed eating so many fruits and vegetables and I did not go hungry, I lost 8 pounds.
The 30 day trial and Ellen's support enabled me to try out a change that I probably would not have attempted any other way. Now I am continuing to eat raw and to collect compliments on my improved appearance and serenity!

Raw Food Potlucks
Living Yoga's raw food potlucks are unique! It is our mission to model and teach a low fat, simple, and easy to digest raw vegan diet, because this is a healthy and sustainable diet! Fresh ripe fruit predominates in this way of eating, with lots of organic greens, other vegetables, and small amounts of healthy raw fats (such as avocados, nuts, and seeds). When planning dishes to share at a Living Yoga potluck, please avoid the use of oils, salt, spices, strong herbs, onions, and garlic. If you are unsure what to bring, ripe fruit is always appreciated, also organic greens. At the potlucks you will learn food separating and combining principles, and how to put together delicious, simple recipes and meals. Everyone is welcome!
Summer Potlucks:
Sunday August 17, 1:00pm - 3:00pm. With SPECIAL GUEST raw food leader Don Bennett from New York!
